Cabinet Ordinary Meeting: Electoral Commission Bill Passed.
Garowe, July 19 - The cabinet of Puntland State Somalia approved the electoral commission bill during its weekly ordinary meeting held on Monday.
The session was presided over by H.E Dr. Abdirahman Mahamed Mahamud(Farole).
In his presentation to the cabinet, Dr. Abdi Hassan Jimale the State Minister for Democratization and Federal Affairs revealed that the commission will have nine members. The President of Puntland shall retain the powers to nominate five members of the electoral commission whereas the remaining positions will be selected by the parliament.
Amongst other things, the electoral commission will be mandated to oversee parliamentary elections, county elections and the adoption of the multi-party system.
Fulfilling its constitutional obligation, the government will proceed to present the bill to the parliament for approval. Finally, the government of Puntland will seek presidential consent for the bill's enactment.
The incumbent administration illustrates its commitment to its campaign manifesto which promised the delivery of a multi-party system.
